We visited a Benedictine Abbey in Tholey after our first morning of classes. I had read The Rule of Saint Benedict in Search 102, so it was really exciting to experience his work in action. The abbey was not really what I was expecting; all of the rooms were bright and beautiful except the church which was not how it was described in the text. The monk who led the tour told us about how he jokes around with the other monks, but in the Rule of Saint Benedict, monks were supposed to be silent and somber all the time. The excursion was really interesting and eye-opening about what it is like to be a monk today.
